On February 1st, 2025, the Sociology Department organized a trip to Khonoma Village, Nagaland—Asia’s first Green Village and home to the Angami Naga tribe.
The purpose of the visit was to explore the village’s remarkable conservation efforts, experience its traditional lifestyle, and gain insights into the history and culture of the Angami tribe.
During the visit, members observed that the village has a population of about 3,000 and is marked by a distinctive gate featuring symbols of the sun, moon, and “Hek” (wine-pouring jar), used during festivals. The village is famed for its rich heritage, clean environment, and organized cleanliness drives every 2nd and 4th Saturday. The locals practice both terrace farming and jhum cultivation. Historically, Khonoma is known for its fierce resistance to British colonial rule. With guided tours and eco-friendly practices, Khonoma holds strong potential for sustainable tourism.
